  VISA POLICIES

As a foreigner you can not study in Germany on a tourist visa. You must apply for a student visa, a visa for a language course or for a student applicant visa.

There is no legal right to a visa, even if all documents are submitted. The ultimate decision rests with the legal and consular sections of the embassy.

  CATEGORIES OF STUDENT VISA

There are mainly three categories of student visas. It is necessary for you to hold a valid passport, to provide proof of financial means for your period of study, and to have either university admission (student visa) or at least a confirmation of your status as an applicant (student applicant visa).

Student visa: The visa for purposes of study is issued if you have already been accepted to study in Germany.

Student applicant visa ( Studienbewerber-Visum): This type of visa lasts for three months and is appropriate if you want to get acquainted with the place before you gain admission. T he student applicant visa is particularly important for applicants to the Hochschule für Musik and Theater (College of Music and Drama), so that you can enter the country for the entrance examination. This type of visa may also be useful to applicants who wish to improve their language skills in Germany before starting their studies. The student applicant visa can be converted to a student visa if you receive your admission from the university or college during this period.

Visa for language course: This visa is valid for those of you who only wish to attend a language course in Germany . It is important to note that if you intend to begin studies in Germany immediately after your language course ends, you must apply for either a student visa or a student applicant visa before arrival in Germany , otherwise you will have to leave Germany at the end of the course and reapply from your country. The visa for a language course cannot be converted into a student visa or a student applicant visa in Germany .

  PERMISSION TO WORK IN GERMANY

As a student in Germany you may, as a rule, work for a maximum of 3 months. This depends on where you study and work can take place only during recess periods (e.g. semester holidays). You are normally not allowed to take up employment during your language course.

  PROCESSING OF VISA APPLICATION

You will have to apply for your visa in person. It is requested that you prepare two complete sets of application forms before you proceed to the counter. Each set should contain the application form itself as well as photocopies of all relevant documents to be submitted. Visa fees amount to 30 € (to be paid in INR, subject to exchange rate).
