SAT Reasoning Test


• Why should I take the SAT?

Most colleges require the SAT for admissions and may use it to award scholarships


• When is it offered?

The SAT is given 7 times per year


• How long is it?

3 hours, 45 minutes


• How is it scored?

There are 3 sections: Critical Reading, Math, and Writing. Each section is scored from 200 to 800. The lowest score you can get on the SAT is a 600; the highest score is a 2400.

• What does the Surprise Section mean?

In this section, commonly known as the Surprise Section or the Unscored Section, there is a 25-minute section, known as the variable section. It may include critical reading, math, or writing multiple-choice section. This section does not count in your final score, but is used as a sounding board to try out new questions for future SAT Tests, and to ensure that scores on new SAT editions are comparable to earlier scores of the test. • What is the test order?

The 25-minute essay will always be the first section of the SAT, and the 10-minute multiple-choice writing section will always bring up the rear or the final section. The remaining six 25-minute sections can appear in any order, as can the two 20-minute sections. It is quite likely that examinees sitting next to each other in the same exam may be answering test books with altogether different sections.


• Where is it held?

It is conducted in 11 cities spread across the country, including the four metros of Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata. Other cities include Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Cochin, Hyderabad, Kodaikanal, Musoorie, and Pune.


• What is the ideal score?

The SAT is scored out of a total of 1600 points. Each university has its own cut-off scores. Most universities consider a score of 1300 plus to be good. 1400 plus would be a very good score and 1500 plus would be the ideal.


• How long is my test score valid?

Your SAT score is valid for 2 years.
